Why do Dublin taxi drivers like country music so much?
Published by bbt February 15th, 2005 in bernard, personalGoing to the airport this morning, and yet again, another taxi driver had Country FM tuned into his car radio? Blasting out (well maybe not “blasting”, but whispering loudly) “Blanket on the ground”, “Past the point of rescue”, and other such tunes.
Why is that?
The number of taxi drivers that listen to country music is quite high. Maybe its the sense of they are similar to truck drivers driving the long and lonely roads of the U.S. of A. (Who can forget Convoy, that excellent trucker/C.B. radio movie of the 70s). I have to say I absolutely loved that movie, but more for the use of C.B. radio than the use of trucks.
Maybe because its the feeling that the music gives you, you know, everyone is your friend, your lil’ woman is waiting for you when you get home, your friend who done you wrong is still your friend.
In a past life I was crazy about C.B. radio/Ham radio (still am, still got my licence, but not much chances of erecting a 25M antenna in an apartment!), and I have to say, the number of people that were involved in Ham radio/C.B.:
1. were crazy about radio
2. were crazy about driving
3. were crazy about easy listening/country music
Maybe its the whole combination of the three involved in truck driving/taxi driving that makes taxi drivers a good audience for a lil’ bit of country.
I have to say I am partial to a lil’ bit of country, now and again. Randy Travis, what a voice!
Now, I better drink my coffee, or I’ll miss my flight to Glasgow. I have to go to our Scottish office to do some work.
