Free speech, or tail wagging the dog?
Published by bbt March 3rd, 2005 in bernard, irishblogs, personal, politics/world affairsI just finished looking thru the 60 RSS feeds I try to read daily.
Mostly tech related, or Irish related blogs of friends, and people I know. I saw one entry in Gavins blog regarding the online diarys of two political candidates in the Kildare region, namely Ã?ine Brady and Shane Cassells.
Nothing to see here I thought, usual, we will do this, that and the other, and then, oh will ya look at that, we aren’t doing any of it.
Then I saw a post in Bernie’s blog relating to these new blogging stars. Again I thought nothing really new here, same old same old.
But then I read Tom’s blog, and he had a different slant on it. He looked at it from the point of view that, well blogging is supposed to be about releasing information, sharing yours views, commenting on something, and having those views linked, updated, and read by as many people as possible. Blogging software is free, so there is no real reason that can be based on cost.
[I have to say I agree with him on that]
Then he dug up a little jem out of the sites.
He writes:
A quick check of the code on the ‘blog’ (the actual iframe page where the content is held) pages yields the following:
SRC=”http://www.fiannafail.ie/syndication/local_content.php4?
reference=ainebrady.com&state=31″ type=”text/javascript”>
It appears that all the content on these sites goes through Fianna Fail HQ. Fianna Fail can’t have their candidates saying anything which doesn’t toe the party line, can they?
On inspection, both of the sites, do have a syndication link from the Fianna Fáil main site, reference=shanecassells.com&state=6 for Shane, and reference=ainebrady.com&state=31 for ine.
But to be honest, we don’t really know if this is the case. Is it going thru fianna fail for clearance, or for other reasons, maybe to keep everything in one place?
Well, I thought I’d pick it up here, and so I e-mailed them. I sent to an e-mail to both Ã?ine and Shane earlier this evening. The text is here.

Hi Bernard, one important point that I think you missed out on is the lack of permalinks in the ‘blogs’
Permalinks offer the facility to link to individual posts, so if I want to comment on something you mention in your blog, I get the link to the post, and I link to that.
This is not possible in the Diaries of these two politicians and makes them far less intereesting from the point of view of creating discussion on issues.
