Heh, looking around today at different things, and I come across this:

“We plan on continuing this increase for the foreseeable future,” said Georges Harik, product management director for Gmail.

Harik said that “less than a few percent” of Gmail users are bumping up against the 1 gigabyte limit.

“We’re doing it to anticipate what our users needs are and their needs grow over time,” he said.

As Maura, says:

Considering how cheap hard drive storage is these days, it’s not a huge concession for a company like Google to offer 2GB to its users. Plus, since very few people will fill their account up to capacity, this gesture makes Gmail seem munificent. It will be interesting to see how the company copes as more and more people take up their magnanimous offer.

This is of course after Yahoo! offering 1GB of mailspace on their webmail.

As the below Google image, shows, they are going the way of the Sun Nth degree campaign. They are in it for the longterm.
