The left-wing councilor from Izquierda Unida, was chosen by her colleagues in the party

Idoia Saralegui, a councilor from Izquierda Unida political party in Pamplona City Hall is the person chosen to open the 2005 Sanfermin fiestas where she will light the rocket at the traditional “chupinazo� on the 6th of July, at 12.00 midday that sets off the fiestas.
Saralegui was chosen from among her own party members, after the Mayor of Pamplona, Yolanda Barcina, had decided to concede the honor of setting off the rocket to the Izquierda Unida left-wing political group. This decision was taken as it is a tradition for each of the political parties in the City Hall to take turns in setting off the opening rocket. The only exceptions to this custom are when some famous sportsman or personality is chosen instead of a councilor.
Idoia Saralegui, who has been a left-wing councilor in City Hall for the past six years, has been the official party spokesperson during the last two years. She will become only the fifth woman to set off the rocket throughout the long history of the Sanfermin fiestas.
