Google and their bloody localised searching
Published by bbt August 4th, 2005 in bernard, internet, irishblogs, tech, treo650, websites, wifi[UPDATE:]
I got a comment last night from freddi
giving me the following information:
=====================
Type http://www.google.com/ncr once in your browser - after that it will stop redirecting to local versions.
=====================
Googling in groups I got the following:
Clicking on the “Go to Google.com” (which links to google.com/ncr) on
the Google.co.uk homepage also works - best guesses for the “ncr” bit?
No Country Redirect ?
So, there we have it! No redirects!

Although Google’s localising searching is good (TM) for users and even better for they themselves, sometimes its a pain in the browser.
I am in Hamburg Airport waiting to meet someone, and I decided to browse while I wait. So after eventually persuading (their online purchasing system seemed to be on the fritz…) Vodafone to take €5.95 of my money for the chance to surf using their WLAN, I go looking for places that stock Palm Treo 650 cradles.
I go to Google.com, and I get redirected to Google.de (as I am on a .de network). Even tho’ the bastards re-direct me to Google.ie when I am at home, and try to get me to accept at least 4 cookies (which I am not sure of the content), they still redirect me to Google.de
Surely it wouldn’t be too much to ask them to redirect me to the correct Google(i.e. the Irish one) arrival page that they *normally* send me to?
I’ll put it on my to-do list.
I eventually end up buying it from expansys.ie, who finally seem to have it in stock, or are getting it in soon.
Here’s hoping….

Right behind you there 100%, it drives me feckin nuts! I’m in Finland and it always redirects to the Finnish site when all I want is the .ie or .com
Eh, they did send you to the correct version of google, the redirecting is based on IP…
Type http://www.google.com/ncr once in your browser - after that it will stop redirecting to local versions
