RTE to offer high quality video content streaming to Irish IPs
Published by bbt August 7th, 2005 in bernard, internet, irishblogs, tech, websites[UPDATE]:
Not as excellent as I had originally thought…..
Bedlam read what I was supposed to read fully…that’ll teach me to be reading and writing when sitting in a car outside an airport.
This RTE service is only for GAA sports…which is interesting, but it would be even more interesting if it was ALL TV output of the stations.
Note to self: pay more attention when reading in a fast moving car!
==================
Excellent!
This couldn’t have happened at a better time!!
We recently ditched our NTL cable TV subscription (well we actually were getting free (as in free) NTL TV as they didn’t seem to be bothered charging us until now) and I was getting TV with-drawal symptons slightly.
But now I see from Michele Neylon’s blog that:
“RTE is to offer a high-quality video stream to broadband users in the 32 counties. The new service is being offered in accordance with an agreement between the broadcasting authority and the GAA and will be restricted to users located in the 32 counties.”
Now, one slight (possible) dampener on the parade…if its Real Media then I am not so happy. RTE seem to favour Real Media when they offer streamed content. Whlie some may like Real Media, I in fact hate it. AFAIAC Real Media is not high quality content. Some may like it but I don’t. HIgh quality in my eyes is QuickTime video/audio, and mp3/4 audio.
If RTE is going to limit clients to being in .ie then surely they can up the quality of it.
I hope for my sake that I am wrong. Lets hope so.
While this is a great thing, the RTE seem to be relying on IP as a pointer of where users are. As Michele rightly points out:
“I imagine this may cause some issues for satellite broadband users, as their IPs will show up as not being Irish.”
Full information can be gotten here.
Excellent news. Glad to see that the RTE is keeping up with new technology like video streaming and RSS feeds.

I would be less worried about it being real media and more concerned that, unless I’m missing something, it is for GAA matches only so won’t be much of a replacement for your lack of NTL. Now if only there was some other way of getting tv on the internet….
