Resetting a Cisco Catalyst 2948G to factory defaults
Published by bbt August 18th, 2005 in bernard, cisco, irishblogs, techTo reset a Cisco Catalyst 2948G switch to factory defaults do the following:
[NB: This will RESET the switch to factory settings!]
1. Connect via serial to console port (Use these terminal settings-9600 baud rate/No parity/8 data bits/1 stop bit)
2. Turn off the switch, and then turn the switch back on
Wait a few minutes after the power reset, if necessary, for the switch to present the first password prompt.
Important: After the presentation of the first password prompt, you have 30 seconds to complete the recovery procedure that follows in Steps 3–7. Because you only have 30 seconds to complete this procedure, press Enter whenever the switch prompts you for an old or new password. This action is the equivalent of the entry of a null character and allows you to complete the recovery quickly.
A failure of any of the steps that follow indicates that you have exceeded the 30-second time limit. If you exceed the limit, you need to power off/on the switch again. You need to return to Step 3 and start the procedure over.
3. Press Enter at the password prompt to enter a null password
4. Type enable at the prompt to enter enable mode.
5. Press Enter at the password prompt to enter a null password.
6. Type clear config all
This command will clear all configuration in NVRAM.
This command will cause ifIndex to be reassigned on the next system startup.

8. The type set enablepass and enter this password.
After the configuration erase in CatOS, you do not need to reload the switch. The configuration takes effect immediately, and the switch returns to the factory default configuration.

I got a catalyst 2100 switch and need the default password (factory password), unfortunately I have no contract with cisco, so if you have any
hints for me, I will be lucky.
regards
Andreas
Hi Andreas,
After doing a little googling I found the following:
“Password Recovery Procedure for the Cisco Catalyst 1700, 1900, 2100, 2800, and 2820″
http://www.cisco.com/warp/public/474/pswdrec_2800.shtml
I don’t have a 2100, so I am sorry but I cannot try this, and I can’t guarantee it’ll work! If it does work, this will RESET the switch to factory settings!
Let me know if you tried it and if it works!
Please stop by again.

Hey I have the 1900 but with firmware version 1.09 or earlier aparently b/c this isnt working for me. I also do not have a contract with cisco. I follow the directions on http://www.cisco.com/warp/public/474/pswdrec_2800.shtml.
I have a Cisco Catalyst 2849G i followed your instruction and succesfully defauled my switch to factory defaults but i was wondering how can i make the configuration menu come up with i unplug and plung the switch back into power.
I know on the 2950G as soon as you reset and power it backup it start this configuration mode.
