Warning if you intend on subscribing to Eircom.net broadband…
Published by bbt September 7th, 2005 in bernard, internet, irishblogs, personal, tech….and if you live in an apartment block that does not offer access to non-postman SDS-type courier people.
I had to (not wanted to, but HAD to) subscribe to Eircom.net broadband (TM - not technology), after SMART had told me they could not service the area for a while longer.
After ordering it online from eircom.ie I saw it would be added to my bill and would be sent.
Didn’t mention when and where to.
So I rang them up. When I got thru to the AVR I said “I want to speak to a human”, and was put through.
I asked the person could I change my delivery address for the modem pack, to my office address as I lived in an apartment block that did not have access to leave a large package.
They said no because it was “for security policy” (bollocks says you and me both).
I told them that SMART Telecom can have a different address on the modem pack delivery, and they didn’t seem to understand English.
So, eventually today (15 days after I ordered the damn thing) I rang them up again.
Oh yeah the SDS guy tried to leave it for you on the 29th (almost 10 days ago!) but oculdn’t get in. Thats what I told your STUPID cow-orker!
Can I change the address now please. No, security policy. Fucking muppets.
I rang SDS, after shouting at them, I got through to a really nice guy working in the GPO who sorted it for me in minutes.
So, moral of the story, get broadband off *ANY* provider *OTHER* than Eircom.

In my experience, SDS have just left a normal parcel delivery notice for me and I went and collected it from the nearest sorting office that evening or the next day…Do you have this problem with every parcel that can’t be delivered?
Hea there winds,
Yes, I have that problem with *every* package that teh postman doesn’t deliver.
Normally, intelligent companies will allow you to specify a different shipping address from the billing address, but not eircom. No, that would be logical and common-sense for them.
(just for the record, I am not pissed off at the SDS guys, they just deliver the packages that errorcon tell them to.)
Sigh, maybe they’ll get on the cluetrain sometime before we all have fibre to the door. Hah! Yeah and pigs will fly

Any other broadband company other than eircom????
Not a fan myself, but there is one Irish broadband company (oops did I just give it away?) that is far far worse than our National Annoyacom.
Yes, you have it ‘Irish Broadband’.
Due to issues we had with Eircom, we had Irish Broadband installed. The initial guys arrived and said they couldn’t install it due to location.
About 10 days later a team of three installers arrived and fitted it.
We wanted to upload job adverts on jobs.irishdev.com which is part of the IrishDev.com site.
But every time we went to submit the job we got timeouts. This wasn’t happening before with Eircom.
That’s when our problems started. Calling their support line, holding for 10-15 minutes at a time, getting through and getting some numb skull who had nil capability.
Finally, startign from late August, after two weeks of our support engineer trying to call, and then trying to get a response by email (which incidentally bounced back on occasion) I started to get on the case myself.
Firslty, I rang, and after finally getting through I was told the support manager, Darren Brooks, was not available. The engineer said he’d escalate the problem.
Still having no satisfactory resolution or communication from them some 5 weeks after logging the issue we called again to speak to Martin O’Toole who is, we were told, the head of Support. I was told he would call me back within 15 minutes. No call. We then emailed Darren Brooks, Martin and Paul Doody who is the CEO of Irish Broadband. Still - no reply.
Eventually we gave up - what is the point in working with a company when even the CEO has no interest in solving a customers problems?
So, if you want a broadband service with no customer service and which is slower than the NTR tollbridge on the M50, these are your boys!!
I’m still waiting on broadband from Smart, since July. There has been issues with the order, I believe Smart took down the wrong Eircom account number from me on the phone and then Eircom take at least a week to go through the delaying tactics that they use.
Anyway, I corrected the wrong Eircom account number with Smart (and I use the term loosely) customer support people but I keep getting told that Eircom have rejected the request due to errors on the order. This has happened at least THREE times. At this stage, I would go and get broadband off anybody else. But therein lies the problem in the technological 3rd world that Ireland is, I can’t get broadband off any other provider. Brilliant.
It’s not smart, it’s just tragic.
Who says you cant get broadband off anyone else?www.tradesmenireland.com was set up by myself steve guerin, the general jist of the site is that we register tradesmen in the 32 counties and the general public can access the site and view the details of the tradesmen (a mini webpage with photos). The public can also post a job on the site. e.g. plumber wanted in the limerick area. Tradesmenireland will then send an email or text message to every plumber we have registered for the limerick area advising them that there are jobs on the site matching their description. We are in the process of setting up a sites for sale section and also a plant / machinery for sale section. We will also have pages where anyone can access details of all building materials and products. e.g. fireplaces, roofing materials, tiles, timber flooring solar energy, wind energy etc. This has nothing to do with broadband i hear you ask! but TRADESMENIRELAND has something to do with broadband. The people who designed the site for me are zicom internet who have the rights to sell skydsl broadband via satellite. which means virtually anyone can get broadband access. If you wish to know more about tradesmenireland or satellite broadband contact me at steveguerin@gmail.com
I finally got my broadband from Smart
