I was at the opening of Novara.ie’s new offices on North Earl Street tonight. The opening guest was Tom Kitt, Minister for eGovernment.

One thing that struck me was he mentioned e-Domocracy. This seemed to be one of his “ideas”, which encompassed discussing government policies with the public. He did not go into the actual details of how this discussion would take place, but from an educated guess, I presume it was based somehow on blogging.

It can only be based on blogging. Giving an idea on what a government policy is, and discussing it via blogs, and comments. this will give the current government an edge on the opposition with regards to policy.

*If* the government (in fact *any government*) get wise to the idea of blogging and discussing policy with the public, it will only benefit both parties in the outcome.

However, what the government have to realise is, that, even if they discuss the policy with the public, the *greater good* may go against the common decision. In this case, the government have to be bigger and forge ahead with that common good policy, and not the “get rich”, or the “keep the majority happy” policy that may appeal to the masses.

I hope that Tom Kitt will see this is just as important, as the discussion.
