Of course the question is what is the definition of “a while”. ;)
I *think*, now, I feel vindicated (not sure tho’ too early in the morning) for buying my flat screen TV December just gone.

Of course, Doc Searl’s 0-day info could be the usual sales bumph to get people to buy more stock of TVs that are currently retailing, but I am willing to stake a (smallish) bet that this is true for the moment. Even if its only 1 year, I am happy with that.

As Doc states:

First, if LCD screen price/feature trends continue in their same general down/up directions, by the end of this year, we’ll see 1080i and 1080p HD flat screens for under $1k at Costco and the big box electronics stores. (For what it’s worth, folks at Sony and Sharp told me at CES that they expect resolution improvement to plateau for awhile at 1080p as a maximum resolution.)

I was slightly worried about the progression of LCD TV resolution train that seemed to be breaking barriers each few months, but after looking around for some insight and after reading this, I think I may have purchased at an “optimum time”.

We bought our Samsung LE26R41B 26″ LCD TV Fully High-Def Ready (Note: not “compatible”) from the very nice people in Kelly & Dollard in Waterford just before Christmas for an excellent price.

This TV is true HD (as the standard is currently) with:
# HDMI Digital Connectivity - Perfect Audio Visual Reproduction
# 1366 x 768 Resolution
# 800:1 Contrast ratio
# Nicam stereo
# SRS TruSurround XT
# Analogue tuner
# 16:9 screen
# Viewing angle 170 x 170 Degrees
# Brightness sensor
# HDMi Input
# 2 x SCARTs, 1 x component in, 1 x video in
# 1 x S-Video in, Headphone out
# Luminance (cd/m2) 500
# Viewing Angle (H/V) 170°/170°

And a whole bunch more.

This TV when combined with the Samsung DVD-HD850 DVD Player with HDMI Digital Interface HD DVDs rock. Really.

I can wholely recommend ShopIreland.ie for delivery times (although the box was slightly damaged when it arrived the contents was perfectly safe inside, *and* I was not able to track it on the web).
I made the purchase on a Sunday evening, and the box was on my desk in work the Monday around midday. Thats delivery for you.

So, all in all, once Doc Searl’s contacts are right, we may have been right ;)

Bernard, can you remove the angular grey border and stand at the bottom of the Samsung. I’ve been thinking of getting a 26″ HD Ready LCD for a few months now but only want one with a black border to tone in with our cast iron furniture. Is it easy to hang one of these on that wall?

Also, this screen is 768 vertical lines right? But the highest resolution is 1080 vertical lines? So would I be better off getting one of those? Sorry, I’m a bit thick when it comes to TV technology ;)

    hea James,

“can you remove the angular grey border”
If you mean the thing that looks like a speaker (the perforated grey grill) no you can’t.

    thats the built-in speaker.

“stand at the bottom of the Samsung”
Yes you can :) the stand comes in the box, but by default is not setup. There is also a wall-hanging bracket that looks pretty sturdy.
But you will need either 1) some other type of stand, or 2) to use the wall mounting.

To hang them on the wall sure, its easy, but you would need a strong wall. I have not looked into it, as our wall is a partition.

I guess to have *true* 1080 then maybe…erm thats a good question, I know I checked it out before buying it…I don’t remember now James!

    I’ll have to check!

    thanks for the comment,
    b

D’oh! Lol…. ok thanks Bernard. It looks very much like the right TV for me except for that grey speaker - maybe Kelly & Dollard would throw in a tin of black boot polish with it ;->
