I got my hands on an Eircom Advantage VOIP phone this morning to see how it works.

The handset looks standard business like. Grey, and buttons. Branded Eircom also.

When I connected it to our LAN, it firstly looked for our DHCP server (is it possible to give it a fixed IP?), then I presume got across the NAT’ing on our firewall.

It then took a public IP, and connected to (what I presume) is a SIP gateway (I got the IP, but it doesn’t resolve).

All took approx. 20 seconds.

It is assigned an extension on “Eircom’s PBX” (my words), and a DDI (Direct Dial In) number.

By default there doesn’t seem to be a mailbox setup. Also the dial out number, seems to be, a masked number, possibly set at the PBX somewhere.

Antoin says its not built on asterisk, and I believe him. Eircom seems to be using NetCentrex for their VOIP service deployment, the applications software and hardware, also using Cisco for the integration of voice calls into the existing Public Telephony Network.

So, good news. It exists. It works. Now lets see it they can offer a good triple play service!

David Mc Redmond was tight lipped at the National Telecoms Conference on Wednesday about what Eircom can offer and will be offering, due to their business with Babcock and Brown at the moment.

Sounds interesting. Any timescales on availability? Has anyone done a comparison of the various voip offerings from either a commercial or technical perspective?

    Hi John,

Well at home I use Blueface (www.blueface.ie/) for my voice calls. In a very basic comparison, it sounded as good. Connection time, I would say possibly better, BUT that could be down to my DSL product at home, as opposed to our business connectivity here.

Speaking with an Eircom sales person last year, a business VOIP product was supposed to be released last June.

Speaking with someone else, they say June this year.

So, your guess is as good as mine.

The funny thing was, within about 5 minutes of it connecting to the SIP gateway (my words here) someone from Eircom called asking who I was, and was XXXXX there with me.

So, they seem to be keeping a close eye on things ;)

I should add, from a technical comparison, they are running SIP, and I think (but I may be wrong) a H.323 gateway.

It is not running on asterisk though, I am sure of that.

I am trying to find a little more info out about the possible timelines on this product. I might have more soon!

yeh..eircom have launched their VOIP product last week..currently only for business customers..(kinda stupid…customers that have their account registered on their business even if they actually paying 30 bucks for their bb can have this service) anywyz…eircom will launch it for residential use in september!!!
the deal is i think u’ll pay 10 euros on top of ur bills..to have unlimited calls to 40 countries….and it just works like ur phone does..only difference is..this voip phone would be connected to another zyxel device..that u get in the package..which in turn is connected to ur dsl router..so the deal is..if ur broadband is out..u can’t use the voip phone!!!but yeh i works as fine as your normal phone..and takes about 10-15 seconds to make a phone call!!!
