Guinness gets a new gadget - the Surger
Published by bbt March 15th, 2006 in bernard, food, irishblogs, runningwithbulls.comAbout 2/3 years ago, I remember being asked by a Guinness representative to take part in a Guinness consumer test (Do you drink Guinness? Yes I answered. If so, how often? I said often!) for a new product they were thinking of bringing out.
It turned out to be the now released Guinness Surger.

The device is discribed as such:
“a[n] electrical device with a small metal plate on it; you pour a little water onto the plate, put a pint of the special Guinness Draught Surger Beer in place and then turn the power on, sending ultrasonic pulses up through the beer to create the creamy head we all know and love.”
When I first say the device in operation, it looked like a good idea, and it made a nice *looking* pint, but the head was, well, airy.
The preparation of the pint was impressive, but the head and the taste left alot to be desired.
From my knowledge, Guinness use a certain headspace of Nitrogen in Guinness kegs, which contributes to the creation of the head.
The second problem I see is that you have to buy “special” cans of Guinness. These cans have a modified N % as the ultrasonic pulses create the head artifically.
All in all an interesting product for new Guinness drinkers, but I don’t think that Diageo will get the “old” Guinness drinkers to take this up. [And I put myself into that category]
Guinness see that they now have to get into the home market. People are staying at home with friends more and more instead of going to bars (you wouldn’t think that on a Friday night walking on O’ Connell Street!).
They also see that they have to get Guinness into the market of people who don’t want to wait for 2/3 minutes for their drink to be served.
Maybe they have refined the device, but I think I will stay drinking Guinness, in the pub.
Maybe someone in Guinness can send me one over?
Since, well they are only available in Tesco’s in England.
Find out more at the Guinness site.
Has anyone else tried it?
