The Last Word rang today asking to talk to someone about DVD Jon and his new anti-FairPlay DRM method he wants to license to companies.

I was having a decent(ish) conversation with the presenter and Robert someone (an “ex-hacker”), explaining that DVDJon hadn’t actually cracked FairPlay (he did that months ago), what he had done was replicate iTMS’s FairPlay, so other content vendors could get their video, music, onto iPods.

Realnetworks has already cracked Apple’s DRM
before, but I didn’t hear the noise then.

When the techno-gremlins struck. The telephone went dead! I rang back, but I was slightly too late.

But all was well, I had made my points, that no this software was not for hackers, so they could hack iTMS, that no, this was not so people could hack iPods.

While this software may not be good for the iTMS as a retailer, it may be useful for Apple and iPods, as it could open other content up to the possibility of being played on the iPod.

This is of course, once Apple and Steve don’t sue their collective asses (known as Double Helix Ventures).

This would remove Apple from the go-between position they have in getting content onto the iPod, while still giving the content companies the shillings they need (poor kids).

All leading to some more choice for the consumer. Which can’t be a good thing. This has happened before, and it will happen again. And again…

So, bad day for my telephone voice, but good day for DVD Jon!
