Naked Science

I’m not big on talking about podcasts, mainly because I guess I don’t publish one, but I listen to a few..and like Tom, I longer listen to mainstream radio (except RTE 1, and BBC 4 sometimes). The Naked Scientist podcast never ceases the amaze me. Its such a great resource for people who are interested in science, and I’m sure it could be used in schools too.

NS from 07 11 06 explains how plants “feel” pain. They scream chemicals when leaves are being damaged.

Ethylene is produced by plants to make their fruit ripen quickly, if the plant is being damaged it tells the plant to ripen the fruit quickly, in order for it to be eaten, therefore allowing the plant to reproduce.

A Naked Scientist tip: if you have fruit that you want to ripen quickly, puit some bananas into the frit bowl. Bananas produce alot of ethylene, speeding up the ripening process of other fruits.
