or vice-versa

As most people know, I work for Nokia Networks, and also am very interested in Fon.

So, it comes as interesting that my favroutie WiFi network, and my phone (a very nice Nokia E61) cannot talk to each other, *easily*.

This is mainly to document for the Fon guys (who I know for a fact are looking at this issue seriously) the problems encountered when trying to use *public* Fon coverage.

The screenshots taken from the E61 are from my home Fon wifi network, using my Nokia E61 (Firmware 2.0618.06.05, 14-07-06 RM-89 Nokia E61) with Browser version …..

Using Nokias WLAN Wizard, I select the Fon *public* SSID:

I select the start browsing option, to use this SSID for WiFi Internet access:

Switch to Symbian Browser:

The public login page then loads:

*but* it does not fully load.

And as you can see from this screengrab, the username/password fields are missing from the page, and therefore cannot login.

Screenshot0020

This problem, using the Symbian Browser has happened using 3 FON points, and mine, making 4. So I expect it to be common to all current La Fonera APs.

When using the Opera’s Mini browser, you have to go through a whole network-setup, which is annoying, but common to setting up *all* network accesses, not just Fon.

Using Opera’s Mini browser gives this result:

Firstly begin by creating the new network:

Click on network setup:

Screenshot0007

Opera will then ask to use network connectivity and TX/RX data:

Screenshot0008

Choose your AP, in this case my FON_AP:

Screenshot0029

It will do its “testing”:

Screenshot0010

Then tell you all is well:

Screenshot0011

When you try to logon to the Fon network:

Screenshot0030

This continues and then closes the browser without reason.

If you try to browse to another site (this case The Guardian), the page fails to load, with the same result:

Screenshot0013

And thats about it.

As I said, I know that the Fon guys are actively looking at this. I have also contacted some of the people in Nokia, working on the Symbian platform, and will try to contact some of the E 61 product people.

I hope this gets sorted soon. WiFi was the main reason I chose the E61 (along with the keyboard, nice screen, and PDA appeal-having been a Palm user for almost 8 years.

NB: As always, these are my views, and thoughts. So there.

I just installed my FON access point and realised this morning that I couldn’t login with my N80. I get the exact same result as you do. It’s great (in a sad way…) that other people have the same problem. Please keep all of us FONeros posted on this subject!

And, thanks for a great blog!

    Hi Pär,

Thanks for the comment, and the information on the N80.

Like I said I have been in contact with Fon, and also with some guys in Nokia.

They are looking at the problem at the moment.

I will post any updates I have here. And please keep in touch.

    thanks

Devicescape is a piece of software that makes auto-logon on WiFi networks simple on all kind of devices. Nokia E61 & N80 is not supported yet though…check out the current list of supported devices here: http://www.devicescape.com/learnmore/devices.php

    Best,

I found this on Fon board:

… it seems that this problem is somehow caused by the “WLAN Power Save” feature of the phone. After turning this off the problems are gone. As this probably drains the batteries I hope Fon and / or Nokia are able to optimize the connection between their devices.

Gerry, thanks for posting! One problem though… where can I find the “WLAN Power Save” feature?

    OK, I found this somewhere:

“I think it might interest you and other eddicteds that FON (you know, this huge WiFi Community out there) has launched a beta testing for their Symbian smart client that will connect you to all FONspots which are already over 75.000 worldwide! If you are interested, send an email to client-betatesting (at) fon.com.”

Interesting! Seems like we’ll be able to be FONeros afterall!

How about using Opera Mobile?? Opera Mini is mostly for java-only-phones. Download the 30-day free trial here:

    http://www.opera.com/products/mobile/products/s60/

I’m looking into buying af wifi-enabled symbian phone - so please tell me your progrss

    Hi Niels,

No I haven’t tried the full version of Opera Mobile. But I think the problem is that when you visit a page the page is rendered through Operas network somehow.

If you dont have network connection, then its a no go!

Well, I would go for the E61 (or E61i now) or the N95..you have a pretty good choice.

There is a new Fon client for Symbian phones now. Have a look at that also:

    thanks
