I got my N800 (sans DISCOUNT! BAH!) yesterday.

I am not a fantastic reviewer (I need to actually use it for a little bit before I make comment).

First and foremost: this is an Internet tablet. An Internet tablet. This is *not* a UMPC, a PDA, or anything else people may think.

This is an Internet tablet. Now. Lets continue

My first impressions however are:

Wow. Really nice device. Nicely finished. Feels heavy “enough”.

The packaging doesn’t have the Apple wow factor, but i bought the product for the device not the box. I know, I know, first impressions, etc…

Simple to startup. I had it connected to my phone, Nokia E61, of course :) within about 30 seconds.

When its booted up (in about 6-7 seconds) IT starts off offering to set up communications account GTalk or Jabber.

It would be nice if it came with Gizmo installed, and setup for communications acocunts too. I would much prefer a Gizmo account, rather than a GTalk account.

The most “difficult” thing was to figure out the menuing. But that took about 8-9 mins to figure out. Mainly because I didn’t read any documentation, and just found functions as I needed them.

The screen is super bright, very nice. One little thing maybe: it would be good if they offered (or enclosed) a screen protector (like on Palms or other PDAs

The screen is brilliant colour, but it could be easily scratched, and then its no good.

Using the input features is easy. You can use the on screen keyboard, which can be extended to full screen with the middle menu button.

Typing on this keyboard is quite comfortable. A little slow at first, but takes only a small amount of time to get used to it. Waaay easier than a Blackberry.

The main reason I got the N800 was for web browsing and as a music control for my house.

My main websites I browse daily all look perfect, namely, Newsgator, my Wordpress admin page, my Wiki, Netvibes, and a few others.

I also control my music (iTunes on Powerbook with a web interface powered by PatioTunes) via the N800. This works beautifully.

I also keep an eye on my weather station software, (again a Powerbook app called HomeWeatherCentre which ftps new weather to Runningwithbulls.com.

I also (now) listen to streaming music stations via the N800. All sound wonderful with its stereo speakers.

Menuing and browsing can be a *little* slow, (1 second wait) but thats mainly when writing settings/config to the device.

Memory is made up of 175MB (I think) onboard memory, and also two external slots for memory cards. Nice idea-one for backups and one for media, in my case.

Photos will be forthcoming and also profiles/reviews of each application I use.

Very interesting! I am also considering this because for my E70 Nokia is delaying the v3.x firmware. It was interesting to read that you have an E61 and on top of that you have bought the N800. Did you try the the v3.x firmware for your E61 ? That is supposed to be a good experience because it is supposed to be much faster then the v2.x firmware? What was the bottleneck for you with the E61, why you needed the N800? Browsing through WLAN?

    Hi Aron,

    Thanks for the comment.

    Ok…

Did you try the the v3.x firmware for your E61 ?

No not yet. Currently my E61 is a I think 2.8.9. Its the current firmware release for the E61 for Western Europe. I haven’t bothered upgrading to the newer 3.x firmware yet. I might try and see if I can get a beta version or something.

That is supposed to be a good experience because it is supposed to be much faster then the v2.x firmware?

Thats what I hear also, but again its just from comments I hear. So I can’t say for sure.

What was the bottleneck for you with the E61, why you needed the N800? Browsing through WLAN?

The main reason I wanted to try out the N800 was to have a WLAN device for the house that could control things. I have my phone which works perfectly, but when I am not here, neither is my phone :)
I just wanted a device I could use for Internet browsing, as a music remote control, and also (when I get the required devices) a control to control lights, heating, via a webpage.

    Thats really it.

What are you looking for from the N800? You might be interested in this website: http://www.internettablettalk.com/ it is a fantastic resource. I have spent the day reading almost every thread on it (of course from my N800!!)

    Kiitos!

    hea there phonebattery:

The N800 device isn’t really a telephone. Location and maps are becoming more and more popular…lets see what happens.
