Brian Greene, an original radio surfer :) (Brian gets it….thats all that matters:) ) has started petition to *make* RTE broadcast their TV signals “in the clear” on new digital terristrial television service (commonly known as Free To Air), as the BBC do in England.

Why should we pay our TV licence if we do not have the capability to watch *our* national television stations without having to pay someone like BSKYB?

The current state is as follows (of course, if Wikipedia can be believed):

In September 2006, the Government published on the internet the proposed text of the Broadcasting Bill 2006. This proposes that RTÉ and TG4 will become separate companies limited by guarantee, with the Minister as sole member of both companies (CLGs do not have shareholders). RTÉ will now be legally obliged to agree a charter every five years and publish a statement of commitments every year, and be under the juristiction of the proposed Broadcasting Authority of Ireland.

Either way, please sign this petition. Otherwise, your views will go unheard. Another thing: with the upcoming elections, when you get a politician at your door asking for your vote, you can ask him/her about RTE and their plans. While your at it, ask them about the surveillance of citizens.

Well done Brian. Good job.

clarification1: I want to make the signals FTA be they DTT or DTH DVB SAT, in fact i am more concerned with DTH DVB SAT as its alive and functioning, and RTE are not tasked with running DTT, the Minister is running that himself with the help or BT Ireland.

clarification2: I think the licence fee is a good idea, also public service broadcasting, I would like to see more involvement by the public in the services, that way we can take control of it.

Many Many thanks for your support on this one… regards brian.
