BBC iPlayer - they lied - it doesn’t work!
Published by bbt October 17th, 2007 in internet, irishblogs, runningwithbulls.com, websitesThe BBC iPlayer service is a great idea. Aunty gets with the new kids and onto d’Internet. They even got Mister BlackBeltJones too (yes, him, the dood that “found” warchalking - if bbj reads this, I spent 3 months of one summer chalking Dublin..*so* much fun was had).
Well, the Beeb lied:
It is supposed to work with Windows XP, Media Player and Internet Explorer…but guess what! It doesn’t!
Well, I guess thats what happens when you build a great idea service on a)windows, and b) make DRM built-in (& non-operable).
Let’s hope they get it fixed. I’d like to see Michael Palin’s “New Europe” programme about the new Eastern Europe Baltic States.

mmmm… They do say in the terms and conditions that it’s UK only (sigh!)
Yeah, I checked that..
The IP I have from work is an English IP.
I might have to look further….
But there is no message saying that….would be useful to tell people that!
I had it working under Parallels with XP, WMP11 and IE7. It was fine but was more effort than getting a torrent.
If you’re using your work machine it might be because of the lack of WMP11. At least that’s one of the problems I’ve got with using iPlayer. Not to mention that although I live and work in the UK, my work IP is Finnish.
@zeris: hmm…..interesting…and having (presumably) an Irish IP didn’t cause a problem?
@duncan: yeah I am trying with work machine and another windows machine I have here….hmm, I didn’t have WMP11 on it.
I’ll try that.
Pity they could say that…instead of just checking I had *some* version of WMP running…
@bbt: it doesn’t work from an Irish IP. i was using a web proxy running on my UK virtual machine.
I’m in england….it doesnt work. it’s cost us one hundred thousand pounds (two hundred thousand US dollars) and it doesnt work.
i have a masters degree and eleven years experience in computing.
It doesn’t work.
i think the people who took public money to produce this should firstly have their houses removed and sold, with proceeds going back to the treasury, then have their children put into care as they’re unable to house them.
what?? i’ve covered all bases. they’re cretins and they should be punished. i’ve thought of the children and i’ve come up with a solution.
@josh: I got it working under a virtual machine on Mac OS X running through a web proxy in the UK with no other difficultly that having to upgrade Windows Media Player. So if it can work under that unusual configuration it can be made work.
