Javier Lorente Cía, is a veterinary surgeon who worked in the veterinary services involved in the encierro and corridas for many years.

In this interview he explains what “los mansos” (the meek) are, and the different variations (cabestres, from the south of Spain for example).

Los mansos are bulls who have been castrated at an early age. As a result they are These bulls are involved in the encierro. Each day two groups of mansos lead and finish the group of toros bravos.

Their job is to provide safety (and apply a certain slowing of the group) by leading the toros bravos to the plaza, while the second groups job is to lead any bulls that might have stopped or been left behind in the bull run towards the bullring (so-called ‘sweep-up” group).

El cántico de los mozos al santo es un ritual de obligado cumplimiento que se repite desde 1962. En el primer tramo del recorrido (cuesta de Santo Domingo), frente a la hornacina del santo, que se encuentra en una pequeña brecha excavada en la piedra y adornada con un panel que porta los pañuelos de las peñas, los mozos se encomiendan a San Fermín pidiendo su protección durante la carrera.

This is the song that the runners (called “mozos”) sing to the Saint. In the first “tramo” (section) of the encierro, in the Cuesta de Santo Domingo, you find the little alcove in the wall which is adorned with the pañuelos of all the Peñas. Here the runners sing this song to the saint asking for his protection during their run.

The lyrics of the song are:

A San Fermín pedimos,
por ser nuestro patrón,
nos guíe en el encierro dándonos su bendición,
Viva San Fermín! Gora San Fermín!

We ask Saint Fermín,
as our Patron,
to guide us through the encierro and give us his blessing,
Viva San Fermín! Gora San Fermín!

No story really, just nice visuals.
I have been taking this camera with me everywhere this past year.
Work or just fun I always had it ready to go, I love its insane picture quality.
Even though I did a bunch of real jobs with this camera, this collection is just things I shot for fun or while testing different looks and equipment.
Shot in: NY, NJ, Peru, Ireland, Mexico, Israel and Palestine. …Apparently I did some time traveling as well.
